What is all the craze about TUMERIC?
This is a little gem of a herb that originates from India. Tumeric (Curcuma longa) is a blood purifier and it aids digestion and relieves congestion. It is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects but recent studies have found that it might be beneficial for keeping parts of our brain sharp as we age1.
Tumeric is also an ant arthritic and acts as a natural anti-bacterial/blood purifier. It has even been used to help manage diabetes when taken directly after a meal by helping the blood sugar level to return to normal2.
Tumeric looks like ginger and it is usually sold in powder form and it is bright yellow. It can be applied externally or ingested in the following ways;
– It can be added to high-protein food to assist digestion and prevent the formation of gas2 – that is why it’s commonly added to lentil and dhal curries. It is effectively used to maintain the flora of the large intestine2.
– As an anti-inflammatory, 1/2 tsp of Tumeric can be combined with a pinch salt and applied to areas of abrasion, bruising and swelling2.
– One of the ways I take it is by adding ½ teaspoon in a cup of warm milk before bed…..easy!
